Song information [edit]

I always worked tardily at night, when everybody left and the telephone stopped ringing. "I Want to Know What Love Is" came up at three in the forenoon former in 1984. I don't know where information technology came from. I consider information technology a gift that was sent through me. I think at that place was something bigger than me behind it. I'd say it was probably written entirely by a college strength.

Mick Jones[5]

Written and composed past Mick Jones, with an uncredited portion (somewhere between v% according to Jones and twoscore% according to Gramm) by Lou Gramm, and produced by Jones and Alex Sadkin, "I Desire to Know What Love Is" was the first single released from Greenhorn's album Agent Provocateur (1984).[6] [7] The vocal features backing vocals from the New Bailiwick of jersey Mass Choir affiliated with the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Dreamgirls star Jennifer Holliday, and featured keyboard piece of work past Thompson Twins frontman Tom Bailey.[eight] The choir as well appears in the song's music video.

"I Want to Know What Love Is" reached number 1 in the UK Singles Nautical chart on January 15, 1985, displacing Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?", staying there for 3 weeks, and knocked Madonna's long-running "Similar a Virgin" out of number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Feb 2, 1985. Information technology was Foreigner'southward kickoff and only pop chart topper in either land, although the band had four number one Mainstream Rock hits and a number one Adult Gimmicky radio striking in the The states. This was the ring'south third of iv number 1 singles on the Mainstream Rock chart. The song spent five weeks at number one in Australia and as well hit the height of the charts in Canada, Republic of ireland, New Zealand, Kingdom of norway, and Sweden, peaking at number two in Switzerland and South Africa.

Nosotros did a few takes, and information technology was good, but information technology was still a bit tentative. So then they all got circular in a circle, held hands and said The Lord's Prayer. And information technology seemed to inspire them, considering after that they did it in one have. I was in tears, because my mum and dad were in the studio besides, and information technology was so emotional.

— Mick Jones on recording with the choir.[nine]

The song has received positive retrospective reviews from critics, with Bret Adams of AllMusic writing: "It's non hard to see why it became Foreigner'due south beginning number one single. Its dreamy, hypnotic feel is due in office to Lou Gramm'southward soulful lead vocals and the New Jersey Mass Choir'due south background vocals."[half dozen]

The song was also issued equally a 12-inch single with a longer fourth dimension length of 6:23. This version contains a slightly longer intro and an extended vocal chorus/fadeout ending. The single's B-side "Street Thunder (Marathon Theme)" is an instrumental track originally appearing on The Official Music of the XXIII Olympiad – Los Angeles 1984 and later on on the ring's 2-CD compilation Jukebox Heroes: The Foreigner Anthology (2000).

Soon subsequently Foreigner'south unmarried topped the charts, the New Jersey Mass Choir released its ain similar-sounding version of the song on an album that information technology also titled I Want to Know What Dear Is. The choir's single peaked at number 37 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and number 12 on the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart.

"I Want to Know What Dearest Is" was ranked as the number iv Billboard Hot 100 single of 1985.[10] It was the band's third Platinum single in the U.Southward.[11] and their first and simply Gold single in the UK.[12] It was certified Platinum in the Britain in 2020.[12]

The diversity of vocal coloring expressed in this recording is stunning. Information technology's a comfortable fall-back plan after "Obsessed" performed well, merely did far from blockbuster numbers.
